Anställda på Ubisoft visar stöd för protesterna mot Blizzard och kritiserar sin egen arbetsgivare

Det pågående upproret på Activision Blizzard, där både hundratals anställda och tidigare medarbetare i onsdags gick ut i strejk och där över 2 000 personer har skrivit på ett protestbrev angående den nuvarande situationen som råder hos utvecklaren har gett ringar på vattnet. Nu kommer även andra branschkollegor till undsättning för en gemensam sak. Att förändra arbetsmiljön i spelbranschen. Nästan 500 anställda på Ubisoft har nu skrivit på ett öppet brev som visar att de står bakom beslutet hos anställda på Activision Blizzard att stå upp för sina rättigheter. Att det är just Ubisoft som tar detta steget är inte särskilt förvånande då de nyligen har haft sin egen "ActiBlizz-gate". Så sent som förra året var den franska utvecklaren i blåsväder då Ubisoft målades upp som en otrevlig och stundtals farlig arbetsplats. Det startade med en serie anklagelser av sexuellt utnyttjande där Assassin's Creed Vallhallas produktionschef Ashraf Ismail pekades ut som drivande men som skulle senare visa sig implicera ett flertal chefer, som i åratal utövat systematiskt förtryck, maktmissbruk och sexuella trakasserier. Ubisoft svarade med att rensa i leden och de introducerade en portal där anställda anonymt nu kan rapportera alla former av överträdelser. De anställda tycker dock inte att arbetsgivaren har gjort tillräckligt för att stävja problematiken och att deras ageranden mest har varit tomma löften. De kräver nu fundamentala förändringar i det egna bolaget, hos Activision Blizzard och i branschen som helhet. Precis som de anställda på Activision Blizzard så anser även Ubisoft-anställda att det måste till nya regler och processer för att på allvar kunna hantera den här typen av brott.

To the workers at Activision Blizzard

"We hear you and want to loudly declare our solidarity with you. Over the past week, the games industry has once again been rocked by revelations that have long been known by too many of us. Revelations that a year ago many were hearing about Ubisoft. It is clear, from the frequency of these reports that there is a widespread and deeply ingrained culture of abusive behaviours within the industry. It should no longer be a surprise to anyone: employees, executives, journalists, or fans that these heinous acts are going on. It is time to stop being shocked. We must demand real steps be taken to prevent them. Those responsible must be held accountable for their actions."

We believe you, we stand with you and we support you.

To the management of Ubisoft

"We, the undersigned, have had enough," the letter continues, directly talking to Ubisoft management. "It has been over a year since the first revelations of systemic discrimination, harassment and bullying within Ubisoft came out. At the time, you acted surprised to hear of these acts going on within your own company and we gave you the benefit of the doubt. However, we have seen nothing more than a year of kind words, empty promises, and an inability or unwillingness to remove known offenders. We no longer trust your commitment to address these issues at their core. You need to do more. That does not mean more training sessions that go ignored by the people who need them most, and that does not mean more reassurances and kind words. It means real, impactful action. The only way to fix something so ingrained is to remove the pillars that are complicit with it, be it actively taking part or by supporting it. This is not only a matter of process, focus groups, PR management or education. This is a matter of people's lives, their mental and physical health. By choosing profit over our security you are literally toying with our lives. We should not have to choose between work and our safety."

"We have stood by and watched as you fired only the most public offenders. You let the rest either resign or worse, promoted them, moved them from studio to studio, team to team, giving them second chance after second chance with no repercussions. This cycle need to stop. We, the collective employees of Ubisoft, demand a seat at the table when it comes to deciding how to move forward from here. The offenders need to be removed from the company, along with those who were complicit in or wilfully ignorant of the actions of others. As the management, it is your role to see these acts going on and take action. Ignorance is not an excuse, not in law and certainly not in the eyes of your employees."

We need real, fundamental changes within Ubisoft, within Activision Blizzard, and across the industry.

Ubisoft svarade senare på det öppna brevet, inte med några konkreta förslag på förändringar eller specifika aktioner utan mer att de tar det på fullaste allvar, att de respekterar deras engagemang och att de "jobbar på det". Nu återstår det att se vem som står näst på tur att ansluta till rörelsen. En sak är nämligen säker och det är att det som händer på Activision Blizzard har skakat om hela branschen rejält och ju fler som ansluter och tar bladet från munnen, desto svårare blir det förstås för cheferna att gömma sig inne på kontoret och sticka huvudet i sanden. Sedan är det såklart inte säkert att det händer något ändå. Jim Sterling tror att det redan är försent och att det enda som hjälper är att bokstavligen bränna ner allt till grunden och börja om. Alternativt plocka fram giljotinen. Vi får se om han har rätt.
